Notes and quotes from the main figures in today’s trades and other news.

First the two trades:

The Marlins sent RHP Edward Mujica to St. Louis for minor league infielder Zack Cox. Cox, a third baseman, is being assigned to Class AA Jacksonville.

The Marlins sent 1B Gaby Sanchez and minor league RHP Kyle Kaminska to Pittsburgh for OF Gorkys Hernandez and a competitive balance draft pick (No. 33 overall). Hernandez will be in a Marlins uniform Wednesday and playing center field.

President of baseball operations Larry Beinfest on the Mujica trade: “We really like the bat. We’re going to send him to Jacksonville. He’s moved through the Cardinals’ system very quickly. Third base is an area of need for us. We thought it lined up. This trade was made with the thought he could be our third baseman in the near future.”

Beinfest on the Sanchez trade: “Gaby did a great job here. What’s going on the past year with him offensively is something that’s been baffling to him and baffling to us. He struggled. Having to send him to the minor leagues this year was difficult on two separate occasions. This may be a good opportunity for him to get a fresh start.

“We’re going to get Gorkys Hernandez, a fleet-footed outfielder, can play center field. We’re going to take a look at him out in center field. Defensively we have him well above average. This is a guy again that has upside, does not have a lot of experience in the major leagues. We’re looking to provide that opportunity for him to show us what he can do.”

Ozzie Guillen on the Mujica trade: “We lost one of the favorite guys, Muji. Everybody was feeling for him. We knew how much Muji wanted to stay here. I think it’s a hard day for a lot of people off the field. On the field, that’s business. That’s something we went through, it’s our fault we’re in that position, I keep saying that. It’s good for Mujica. He’s going to a team that is competing right now and a team that has a chance to hopefully be in the playoffs. That’s good when somebody wants you.

Guillen on the Sanchez trade: “With Gaby, I wish the best for him. I think he’s somebody who has to be excited about the trade, even though Gaby is from Miami. He’s going to a team where he’ll play in the big leagues and they want him there. Obviously he’s a guy I thought personally would be one of the pieces. But like I said we put ourselves in this situation and that’s what we have to deal with.”

Josh Johnson on not being traded: “The only time I really thought about it was with my wife, and with my family. If something happened and we had to pick up and move right away, we had to kind of be prepared for it. Other than that, at the field and everything else, it was nothing but jokes.

“It was a relief. It’s over. I don’t have to answer any more questions about it, after today. That’s it.”

Edward Mujica: “Very surprised. I’m going to leave pretty good teammates and a pretty good team. We haven’t been playing good right now. It’s a business but it’s hard for us.

Carlos Zambrano on being demoted to the bullpen: “I have to do it. There is no other choice. If they put me in the bullpen, they put me in the bullpen. I have to keep doing my job, and keep trying to come back and being in the rotation again. The Cubs tried to do that to me, put me in the bullpen. It didn’t work. My arm is not built to be in the bullpen, but I have to do it.”
